Fancy Folder, Higher Grade?

I think I may have gone overboard this time. Apparently, I insisted that assignments and papers be submitted in a professional manner. In my book, that means a staple or a paper clip.

For this student, it meant a diamond stud. Maybe I should assign another paper to get the pair!

Here’s my question – do you think a fancy folder or a snazzy clip makes a difference in your grade?

My personal opinion is that a folder or diamond studded pin wont reflect on my grade. I would assume my grade would be based on the quality of my paper or assignment. I guess if the class was a fashion course than my objectivity would change would yours?

I am certain that I can manage and organize my handout in accordance to
each course. Besides , I am able to look up syllabuses at any time
just like i would to a bible, by putting it in the front cover of each folder.
Gathering and organizing while materials is a basic attitude that shows good
manners towards the professor who handed it out. Students who didn’t prepare,
even a tiny bit during class might have difficulty getting ready for the
final because most colleges implement a cumulative final which is based on the
sum of all printed materials given during each class. As for me, I like
to get a new fancy folder right before starting the semester. It might sound
funny or ridiculous to someone else, but for me ,it just encourages and fires
me up with enthusiasm to study.

Personally, I would have interpreted the directions exactly how you would have expected it. In my opinion, the diamond stud would be more of a decoration rather than organizing it in a professional manner. When I’m given such directions, I would have made sure that the content of the assignment is professionally organized. Then I would work on the finishing details such as aligning the papers and stapling it to give it a clean and organized look. However, I think that is such a fun and creative idea! It really does add a “bling” to it.

I legit, laughed out loud. ” Maybe I should assign another paper to get the pair!”- That is hilarious. I think handing in an assignment with a diamond stud is a bit too much, but handing in an assignment in a professional folder should be required. Reason being, we’re all in school to become a working professional. We must learn how to act and be like one. Therefore, requiring a student to hand in an assignment in a professional manner will only help the student in the long run.

I think the diamond stud was a save. I remember taking my English 101 class and my professor would take off one letter grade for having it loose when handling it in. I do believe that handing it in a professional manner should get you a better grade. When a student takes their time to present there work in a professional manner, that is the difference between the secretary and the CEO. As students we should take pride in our work. There is noting wrong with going the extra step and knock it out the park.

I like the way this guy does things. But to answer the question no. Fancy folders and snazzy clips are fun, they show character but simply do not have any affiliation with the content of the work at hand. I do believe all papers should be bounded by a paperclip or staple for obvious reasons.

I don’t think the fancy clip itself makes a difference in a student’s grade, but the clip does tell the professor that you are willing to go the extra mile, you’re well put-together and care about what you hand in. So, it may sway the professor toward giving you a better grade, but it’s not guaranteed (of course the actual content has to be good as well.) Making things look nice not only makes you look good, I’m sure it’s also refreshing to professors who are often handed assignments that look like they just came out of the garbage. So I think that writing in super neat handwriting, or having a really nicely typed and formatted paper, or a fancy folder can HELP to encourage the teacher to give the student a good grade as long as the content is good.

Presentation is everything. Well, not quite everything but it is a start. The purpose of secondary education is to prepare us for professional environments. One key to success within the business world is understanding the importance of being polished. Great presentation translates in chosen attire, communication skills as well as the formatting of papers or reports. Though the content of a paper should be the most important factor which determines our final grade, providing the proper formatting relays a message to your instructor or manager that you take pride in the work that you do. You don’t want to be the student or employee who submitted a hand written assignment with a hot chocolate smudge in the corner. Though it’s funny, it also sends a message that you did not place value in the curation of your assigned work. And let’s face it, we’re all more likely to pay attention to something that is aesthetically appealing wether it be a fancy paper clip or stud earring.

A fancy folder will not make the substance of the paper better but it shows the teacher that the student listened to the assignment in regards to the paper needing to be presented in a professional manner. The presentation of the paper and following the guidelines put forth by the teacher are crucial in determining the final grade the student will receive so if that means putting a diamond stud in the paper to make it look professional it shows that the student is taking pride in his/her work even if they are going an extra mile then what was intended. Even if the substance of the paper is poor when the teacher is first sitting down to read the paper the stud can create an illusion that the student worked hard on the paper even if that was not the case.
